How to take care of the acne prone skin

Finding the right formula to treat a skin with acne is a continuing struggle that can last for years. This is because what works in one case does not necessarily work in another.

Tackling skin problems has helped to establish basic principles and care rules. On the other hand, the appearance in the market of such a plethora of products, culminates in most of them having irritating ingredients that over time can do more harm than good; sometimes even aggravating most skin conditions. So, how can we choose from the multitude of tips, products and recommendations and find the ones that fit our needs? Simple: When we understand how the skin works, we understand what needs it has, we listen to it and so we know how to care for it.

Listening to your skin is the most important step towards a proper care.

Most of the time, acne prone skin is not only seborrheic but also sensitive or even dry. The last thing we want to do is apply nutritious and moisturizing products. Why? Because in the rush of escape from the unsightly pimples and the post-acne signs, it has been (erroneously) induced over time that the solution is to apply astringent products and while removing nutritional products and oils from our skin care routine. Nothing could be further from the truth. Acne skin has the same need for hydration as dry skin. Thus, using aggressive products we do nothing more than destroy the hydro-lipid film of the skin, responsible for the balance, freshness and health of our skin.

What happens when we break this balance?

The dryer the skin is, the more it produces sebum to protect itself and it becomes more sensitive and the eruptions will worsen. Because of moisture deprivation and aggressive ingredients in various treartments, it will eventually become dry, resulting in unsightly desquamation and the premature appearance of wrinkles. If we want to protect and care for the skin the right way, while dealing with the underlying problem – acne, we need to create a simple routine with quality products and non-invasive procedures, appropriate to the current skin needs, to be respected because any negligence or exaggeration can prevent even the most effective treatment from having any results.

When more is too much.

You don’t have to fall prey to countless products, treatments and procedures, and you should not apply all the products at once. On one hand, because excess may damage the skin, and also you will not know what works and what does not. But most importantly, most products and procedures sensitize, irritate and develop intolerance. Allow time for products and procedures to do their job. Nothing good happens overnight and under no circumstances will skin problems disappear from one day to the next, regardless of the promises of labels, slogans and advertisements. There are a few steps through which any skin has to go through to become beautiful and healthy, if the treatment is right. In the first phase, everything comes to the surface, then the pimples begin to dry up and the skin passes through a period of regeneration that has the effect of easily decaying, the pimples and marks disappear and the skin begins to be radiant and uniform.

AVRA Aestethic Institute specialists recommend the following steps for acne prone skin care:

  •  Cleansing the skin in the evening, before bedtime, is a must! Nothing is more erroneous than going to bed with your skin loaded with products, sebum and dust, whether you wear make-up or not. Not only does this clog the pores, favors the appearance of the pimples and maintains a bacterial environment favorable to acne, but it also prematurely ages the skin. For acne prone skin, you need to choose a delicate cleansing product without alcohol, preferably without irritating ingredients and no perfume. A good example is FACIAL WASH OILY / PROBLEM cleansing gel from PCA Skin. It contains gluconolactone, lactic acid and aloe and it deeply cleanses and protects the skin.

  •  Applying a Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum after cleansing is mandatory, because the problematic skin also needs a great deal of hydration. The lack of hydration is proven to be along with exposure to the sun, the main cause of premature aging of the skin. The serum should be chosen carefully, preferably an oil-free formula and as simple as possible, but with quality, clean ingredients and no perfume or other irritating ingredients. Our choice is HYDRATING SERUM from PCA Skin because it has a delicate skin formula, along with Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide, which protects and supports the optimal level of hydration in depth.

  • For a clean skin without imperfections, creams with 0.5% Retinol and the new generation chemical peelings are the best solution. However, both chemical peeling sessions as well as the application of Retinol at home are done only during autumn and winter because they are photo-sensitizing and entail the risk of hyper-pigmentation or even mild burns.

  • Apply Retinol creams only in the evening, on clean and dry skin. Avoid the eye area, nasal grooves and mouth corners. Preferably, after applying Retinol, do not apply other products. PCA Skin specialists have developed a stable formula of Retinol, specifically dedicated to problematic skin with prolonged action – INTENSIVE CLARITY TREATMENT: O.5% PURE RETINOL NIGHT.

  • Applying a cream with SPF 50 is mandatory during the day, even if you use photo-sensitizing products or not. UV rays are one of the main causes of premature aging, degradation and hyperpigmentation of the skin. SPF creams with zinc oxide should be avoided because they leave a whitish filter, are clogging the pores and favoring the appearance of the pimples. Preferably use a smooth texture cream that gently enters the skin and is a good base for makeup, like the PCA SkinWEIGHTLESS PROTECTION BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 45

  • It is important that during the treatment with the active ingredients that dry out the skin, to use a nutritive cream that nourishes the skin in depth and protects its elasticity. Our recommendation is REBALANCE cream from PCA Skin, which soothes and supplies the antioxidants and vitamins needed for a young, healthy skin.

  • Make sure that other care products and make-ups are not comedogenic and do not pinch pores because they prevent the effectiveness of the treatment.

  • Make-up tools (brushes, sponges, etc.) should be cleaned and disinfected at least once a week and kept away from dust because these are some of the most common sources of rash, eruptions and acne.

  • The pillow side needs to be changed every few days and never put the unclean face on the pillow because it loads sebum and products and can cause pimples and inflammation.

  • Use a special cotton towel for face only, that you do not use on your body or to wipe your hands. Skin with acne tendencies needs special care compared to other types of skin, but if you take into account the tips above, you will soon find that the effort is worth it.

New Year A Better You

Mid January is the time when we really validate our resolutions for the new year. What were the unrealistic goals and expectations we set on the night between the years, what desires are really in tune with what we feel, what are the intentions that we will actually work towards?

When it comes to our body, many times we set unrealistic expectations for the way we want to look and we roll them from one beginning of the year to the next, accumulating along the way frustration that we have not reached them.

What are the keys to success?

  • Don’t set resolutions, set intentions.  Have an honest look at where you are and went you want to be in terms of the way you feel in your body rather then what you see in the mirror. Visiting your aesthetician and having an in-depth body evaluation can help you get an objective view of how you can improve both the way you look and the way you feel in your body, as well as a realistic plan of how you can achieve that, with the timeframe necessary as well as the milestones along the way. We highly recommend the InBody evaluation, available at AVRA Aesthetic Institute and a consultation with our top aestheticians and doctors.
  • Be gentle with yourself. We know you want change, and you want it fast, but don’t forget to listen to your body in the process of doing so. Today, you can reach results comparable with the ones of plastic surgery, with non-invasive treatments performed with the latest innovative technology in the field of aesthetics. How does non-invasive, pain-free liposuction, that can help you loose up to 6 cm from your waist area in only 4 to 6 treatment sessions of 45 minutes, sound? It might sound too good to be true but it is possible with the new BTL Vanquish Me treatment. How about a face lifting, without surgery, without needles, that offers outstanding results after 4 short treatments that you can program weekly during your lunch time? Visit us to learn more about the BTL Exilis Elite face&neck rejuvenation treatment and discover all the other non-invasive, pain free face& body protocols from which we will select to customise a plan for your unique body.
  • To make it sustainable, adapt the plan to your unique body and lifestyle choose changes and actions that you can sustain long term. For example, the diet recommended by our nutritionist will take into account your food preferences so that you actually enjoy your new eating plan while loosing weight. The treatment plan recommended by our aesthetician will address your body issues, but will be adapted to your lifestyle, so that you can easily squeeze the appointments in your busy schedule. Our face and body therapies do not require downtime, so you will be ready to resume your activities the moment you walk out the door.

Remember though, that just as important as keeping your focus on the long term goals is to make taking care of your body and soul a daily practice.

Beauty and Time Management

How many times have you postponed a massage, a spa visit, a workout or beauty treatment, invoking a lack of time?

”Time for myself” is one of the most precious gifts you can give yourself, one that will benefit you long term, in more ways than one. However, in the rhythm of our modern lifestyle, with carefully planned work obligations, taking time for an activity is always a choice based on input (time, effort, resources) and results.

How much time can you take today to do something for your body? How can you use it wisely to see real changes in a short time?

If you have…

  • 5 minutes, start a meditation practice that will help you get centered and focus on your unique beauty and body goals.
  • 15 minutes, come for a quick session of Lymphastim. It supports your body to naturally detoxify itself, by improving lymphatic circulation and oxygenating the cells. You will feel better, lighter, relaxed, and most likely also loose a few centimetres if you suffer from water retention.
  • 15-30 minutes, schedule an Exilis Elite treatment for body reshaping, skin tightening or face lifting. The innovative treatment uses a combination of Radiofrequency and Ultrasound technology, to boost new collagen and elastin production.
  • 45 minutes, resolve once and for all the problem of the extra inches on your abdomen that won’t disappear, no matter how hard you try! Using the the patented Selective RF™ technology, Vanquish ME is the only technology that can reduce the circumference of the entire abdominal area at the same time. The AVRA Vanquish ME treatment for body reshaping disrupts fatty cells through the selective heating of adipose tissue, a process that leads to fatty cell shrinkage and elimination.

Smooth, Smoother, Smoothest

”Why haven’t I done it sooner?” Is what we hear most often from men and women alike after the first sessions of laser hair removal. Waxing, shaving and other depilation methods are reported as some of the most frustrating beauty and self-care actions.

By choosing to undergo the permanent hair removal treatments, you can have smooth skin effortlessly, with the help of the most advanced technology in the world,  the PlatinumGMT Diode Laser. The treatment will also improve the appearence of your skin by targeting the folliculitis that sometimes appeares when using other methods of depilation. The best news is that the results are visible from the first session, regardless of the skin and hair type.

Timing the start of the hair removal treatment series is essential to ensure the desired results before your next holiday, for example.  With PlatinumGMT Diode Laser, for example, it is safe to have the treatments also in summer, but it will be most efficient in colder months, when the skin is lighter in colour. Start in late summer and early autumn, if your skin is lightly tanned and you can limit sun exposure.

Compared to IPL hair removal treatments, the ones performed with the new diode laser technology have shown to be more effective: offering better results in less sessions, with more time apart between treatments. The diode laser is pain-free, while the IPL patients report feeling pain during treatment.

If you need more information about permanent laser hair removal, our AVRA therapist are ready to answer all of your questions and concerns, before recommending a personalised treatment plan. Book a consultation and evaluation session here.

Get your glow back

Ideally, you come back from your summer holiday feeling and looking relaxed and glowing, after having spent time outdoors, sleeping in late and being kissed by the sun.

More often though, as autumn approaches, what you see in the mirror is dull looking skin, clogged pores, spots that were not there before your beach holiday, as well as fine lines that seem to put not a summer, but a few years on your face. Once the enthusiasm for your perfect tan fades, you might also notice that your skin feels dehydrated and dry.

What can you do to return to a perfect skin? Hydrate, eat fresh fruits and vegetable, include in your diet high quality proteins and healthy fats, go back to exercising and schedule a non-invasive treatment with quick, visible results… in your lunch break.

  1. The Exilis Elite Face Rejuvenation treatment is the quickest fix, in any season.  A short session, focused on the areas of your face that need attention, will stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin in your skin. The effects will be visible after the first session: improved skin texture and face volume, reduction of fine line and wrinkles and a complexion that looks healthy and young.
  2. If you feel your skin dehydrated and clogged – as you might after long haul flights back home – the Jet Peel facial treatment will clean, gently exfoliate, deeply hydrate and then infuse your skin with what it needs the most to feel and look its best: vitamins, peptides or Hyaluronic Acid.  The jet of saline water and air, at supersonic speed, is also cool and restorative.
  3. Autumn is the perfect season to try a chemical peel for your skin, as the perfect treatment of regeneration. The advanced PCA SKIN chemical peels have different formulations for different skin types and  conditions, your AVRA therapist recommending the one suited to your unique skin’s needs, following a skin evaluation. The after treatment magic? A smooth, glowing skin and an even complexion.
